Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
If your Aprilaire vent sanitizing component has stopped doing its job, here’s the straight answer: we stock Aprilaire-compatible sanitizing elements and UV lamp replacements for most Aprilaire air purifier and ventilator models, and a full replacement with installation in Ventura typically runs between $220 and $410 depending on your specific unit. We carry the parts on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the swap the same visit we diagnose the failure. The way homeowners usually discover this is subtle: the air doesn’t smell quite as clean as it used to, or the little indicator on the Aprilaire control panel starts telling them something’s worn out.
You’re not going to get a generic answer here. We’ve been inside enough Aprilaire units in Ventura homes to know exactly what fails, when it fails, and what it should cost to make right. Marcus Veale and our crew have replaced these components in everything from newer Aprilaire 5000 series units to aging Aprilaire 2200 models that have been running since the early 2000s.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire has used a few different vent sanitizing configurations over the years, and the replacement part depends entirely on which one you have. The most common units we see in Ventura homes are the Aprilaire 5000 electronic air cleaner, the Aprilaire 2210 and 2410 media-style units, and various Aprilaire whole-home ventilators that pair with their purifier line. Each one takes a different sanitizing approach, and the wrong part will not fit.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: Aprilaire changed the UV lamp wattage and base configuration between production runs of the 5000 series around 2016. If your unit was manufactured before that, the older 36-watt lamp is what fits. Post-2016 units use a narrower 24-watt lamp with a different socket. They look nearly identical sitting on a shelf, and a lot of online sellers lump them together. We check the model plate and manufacture date on the unit itself before we ever reach for a part.
For the Aprilaire 2200 and 2210 series in particular: these are media-based units that use Aprilaire’s own sanitizing filter cartridges, not UV lamps. Aprilaire eventually discontinued the standalone sanitizing filter for the 2200 series, which is a headache for owners of older units. The workable replacement is a UV retrofit or a switch to Aprilaire’s current air-purifying filter lines. We’ll tell you honestly if a retrofit actually makes sense for your system or if you’re better off putting the money toward a newer unit.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Aprilaire’s OEM sanitizing parts are well-built, but they are priced at a premium. There are quality aftermarket UV lamps that fit these units correctly and meet the same wattage and output specs. Where we draw the line is on no-name lamps from unknown manufacturers – we’ve pulled apart units where those failed in under a year. We stock OEM Aprilaire parts plus one aftermarket line we’ve tested across enough Ventura jobs to trust. Either way, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting and what it costs before we start.

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
- The unit’s control panel shows a UV lamp or sanitizing system warning. Aprilaire units with digital controls monitor lamp hours and will flag replacement when the bulb has exceeded its rated lifespan. This is the most direct signal, and it’s usually accurate.
- Odors return within a day or two of a full system cleaning. When the sanitizing component stops working, the air quickly loses that fresh, neutral quality. In coastal Ventura homes where marine air adds extra moisture, you’ll typically notice this faster than homeowners inland would.
- The UV lamp is visibly dark or flickering. If you can see the lamp through the unit’s viewing window and it looks dim, purple-ish, or completely dark, the bulb is at the end of its life or the ballast is failing. A healthy UV lamp glows steadily.
- Lamp replacement was more than 12 to 16 months ago. Aprilaire UV lamps are rated for roughly 12 to 18 months of continuous use, but in Ventura’s climate where dust and coastal air push systems harder, we recommend replacing them at the 12-month mark. A lamp that’s past its rated hours is still drawing power but producing far less sanitizing effect.
- Your energy bill creeps up while air quality drops. When the sanitizing system’s power supply starts failing, it can draw irregular current through the unit. It’s a subtle symptom, but we’ve traced plenty of mystery energy spikes back to aging Aprilaire power modules.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacements in Ventura, you’re looking at $220 to $410 installed. That’s the honest range. On the low end, a quality aftermarket UV lamp for a 5000 series unit with straightforward access runs around $220 to $260. On the higher end, an OEM Aprilaire lamp plus a ballast replacement on a unit that’s tucked into a cramped attic or crawl space will push toward $390 to $410.
What drives the price difference comes down to three things: which part your specific Aprilaire model requires, whether the ballast or power module also needs replacing, and how difficult the unit is to reach. We quote a flat figure before any work begins, and it covers the part, the labor, the old-part disposal, and a full function check afterward. If we find a secondary problem while we’re in there, we’ll show it to you and quote a separate number – you approve it or you don’t. There is no pressure invoice at the end.
Every Aprilaire sanitizing part we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the part fails or the work isn’t right within 365 days, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on every job, and it’s been our standing policy since 2004.
DIY or Call Us?
April Aire vent sanitizing components involve electrical connections and, in UV systems, a bulb that produces harmful UV-C radiation when exposed outside the unit. This is not a part to tinker with casually. A UV-C lamp powered outside its housing can cause eye and skin damage in seconds, and Aprilaire power modules carry line voltage even when the main system switch is off. If you’re not comfortable working around live electrical components inside a confined attic, this is a call-us job.
That said, there are two things any Ventura homeowner can safely do. First, check your filter replacement history – a clogged media filter makes the sanitizing system work harder and wear out sooner. Second, look at the unit’s indicator lights and note exactly what they’re telling you before you call. Tell me what you’re seeing and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it. When you call (559) 315-0418, a live person answers, and we’ll give you a straight quote based on your Aprilaire model and what the unit is doing. Then you decide if you want us to come out.
FAQs
Aprilaire rates their UV lamps for 12 to 18 months of continuous use, but in Ventura’s dusty, coastal conditions we find the practical lifespan lands at 12 to 14 months before output drops measurably. Homes near the 101 corridor or with pets will be on the shorter end. Call (559) 315-0418 and we’ll check your unit’s history and give you a replacement schedule that fits your house.
If the UV lamp is the problem, no – lamps cannot be repaired, only replaced. If the ballast or power module is failing, sometimes that component alone can be swapped while keeping the existing lamp. We only recommend that when the lamp has more than half its rated life remaining, otherwise you’ll pay for labor twice. Call us with your model number and we’ll tell you what makes sense.
A standard Aprilaire vent sanitizing part swap takes about 45 minutes to an hour once we’re at your home. If the unit is in a difficult-to-reach attic or the ballast also needs replacing, plan on up to 90 minutes. We’ll tell you the window before we arrive.
Yes. We carry OEM Aprilaire UV lamps, ballasts, and power modules for the 5000 series, plus compatible sanitizing cartridges and retrofit kits for the 2200 and 2210 media units. We also stock parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems, so if you’ve got a mixed setup we can usually handle it in one visit.
